The Mediaeval Town

In the 10th and 11th centuries, a prosperous town developed around the Abbey.

The-quality of the architecture and decorative elements of the houses and the parish churches of Saint-Marcel and Notre Dame are evidence of its prosperity.

The layout of the medieval town in the 12th century was much the same as it is today. Large portions of the ramparts, towers and gates remain.

A fresh look at Cluny (Abbey, Medieval town, Museum) is proposed through a series of conference tours organised by the Centre des Monuments Nationaux.
