Cluny

City of art and history

The Benedictine Abbey
of Cluny extended its influence throughout Mediaeval Europe. The abbey church was the largest in the Western Christian world before the building of St Peter’s of Rome.

After nine centuries of monastic life, the site now offers a prestigious heritage, including a number of monastic buildings, a Museum of Art and Archaeology housing major works of civil Romanesque sculpture, a Mediaeval City rich in Romanesque and Gothic houses, two churches, and a magnificent Hôtel-Dieu (hospital), offering a remarkable fresco by the artist Chaimowicz.

The discovery of this site can also be considered from above, from the top of the Tour des Fromages.

A dynamic city

With a National Stud dating back to the 19th century and a number of horse riding events, Cluny has become a Regional Horse-Riding Pole.

The small university town of Cluny, houses the prestigious Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts & Métiers in the abbey buildings. The school trains generalist engineers in mechanical and industrial engineering. Furthermore, in welcoming a number of seminars, the ENSAM contributes towards the town’s dynamism.

Take a stroll through the streets, journey into the past and imagine the time when Cluny was the light of the Western World.
